What's a great lasagna recipe?
i just usually follow a typical recipe, including using ricotta cheese cut with cottage cheese, because i find it too rich, and i usually use italian sausage without the casing. what do you suggest?
1 pound sweet Italian sausage
3/4 pound lean ground beef
1/2 cup minced onion
2 cloves garlic, crushed
1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes
2 (6 ounce) cans tomato paste
2 (6.5 ounce) cans canned tomato sauce
1/2 cup water
2 tablespoons white sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons dried basil leaves
1/2 teaspoon fennel seeds
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
1 tablespoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
4 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
12 lasagna noodles
16 ounces ricotta cheese
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon salt
3/4 pound mozzarella cheese, sliced
3/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

DIRECTIONS
In a Dutch oven, cook sausage, ground beef, onion, and garlic over medium heat until well browned. Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato sauce, and water. Season with sugar, basil, fennel seeds, Italian seasoning, 1 tablespoon salt, pepper, and 2 tablespoons parsley. Simmer, covered, for about 1 1/2 hours, stirring occasionally.
Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Cook lasagna noodles in boiling water for 8 to 10 minutes. Drain noodles, and rinse with cold water. In a mixing bowl, combine ricotta cheese with egg, remaining parsley, and 1/2 teaspoon salt.
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
To assemble, spread 1 1/2 cups of meat sauce in the bottom of a 9x13 inch baking dish. Arrange 6 noodles lengthwise over meat sauce. Spread with one half of the ricotta cheese mixture. Top with a third of mozzarella cheese slices. Spoon 1 1/2 cups meat sauce over mozzarella, and sprinkle with 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese. Repeat layers, and top with remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheese. Cover with foil: to prevent sticking, either spray foil with cooking spray, or make sure the foil does not touch the cheese.
Bake in preheated oven for 25 minutes. Remove foil, and bake an additional 25 minutes. Cool for 15 minutes before serving.

i have a crock pot recipe that tells me to cook this meal on low for 6-8 hours. WHICH IS IT?
that's a big time interval, at least i think so, so how do i know how long to cook it for if i've never made this before. also, it calls for sweet potato cut into bite size pieces-- can i just use the 'yams from a can', even though they're already softer? do i have to use actual sweet potato for the recipe to work?
if you use canned sweets, and cook them for 6 hours. you are going to have mush. do the meal for 6 hours then check on it, if it needs more time, go another hour. add the canned sweets just long enough beforehand to heat them up.

Or Crowd pleasers shared by all? =)) Thanks! It could be anything not looking for anything in particualr.
********CHICKEN FRIED STEAK
2 pkg. tenderized cube or round steak
1 c. whole milk
1 1/2 c. flour
2 tsp. salt
1 tbsp. black pepper
1 1/2 - 2 c. cooking oil
Good heavy skillet
I start heating my skillet first and when it gets warmed up (7 minutes), I add my cooking oil and let it heat also. While that is heating up, I get the steak ready, pound each steak with the side of a mallet or palm of your hand until very thin. Place steaks (2 at a time) in shallow dish containing milk. Next, mix the flour, salt and pepper in a shallow dish. Remove steak from milk, dredge in flour mixture, place into skillet and brown on both sides. Continue cooking until all steaks are cooked.
CREAM GRAVY:
1/3 c. hot steak drippings
1/4 c. flour
2 c. milk
Salt and pepper to taste
I use another skillet, let it get hot and add steak drippings, flour, salt and pepper. Stir with wire whisk until blended. Next add 2 cups milk, continuing to stir until gravy thickens. Serve with chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes.
***********QUICK BACON GARLIC MASHED POTATOES
5 or 6 red potatoes
milk,
dash of garlic powder
butter
half jar of Real Bacon bits
salt and pepper
Peel potatoes and boil until soft, mash potatoes, add a little milk a dash of garlic salt, 2 to 4 tablespoons of butter. add a jar of real bacon bits salt and pepper to taste mix through.

How to put together Irish theme menu?
Hi all, im v. inexperienced cooker 
) but i have to prepare birthday dinner for mayb 5-6 people..irish theme..guests are czech ..ahh i list of possibles..starter,main & desert..can someone tell me what is best!! i've hunted irish recipes etc..here you are!
starter: carrot soup, pea & ham soup, potato soup
main: gammon steaks with whiskey sauce, irish stew, cottage pie, steak with veg, beef stew with soda bread crust, Medallions of beef with port sauce & cashel blue cheese, Irish meat loaf with Colcannon, grilled chicken with fennel, peppered duck breasts with wild mushrooms & cream
desert: strawberry & baileys fool, choc pots with baileys & irish oatmeal cookies, strawberry rhubarb crumble, baileys cheesecake
umm irish stew doesnt sound irish...interesting...anyway..i thought about the gammon steaks with whiskey sauce, served with colcannon ??
Well, if you're looking for simple irish, I'd suggest the following....
Starter: Smoked Salmon, served with wheaten soda bread
Main course: Boiled ham, with white sauce and champ (mashed potato with scallions through it)
Dessert: Apple tart, served hot with fresh cream
If you're feeling extravagant, whisk a little baileys or Irish whiskey into the cream to give it a little kick

Who knows a good recipe for Mexican rice? (to go with mole)?
I was recently given a container of homemade mole sauce which looks and smells absolutely delicious. I'll be preparing it with chicken but want an oustanding rice dish to accompany it. any ideas or links?
I think that the mole with chicken would be better with plain rice than with a spicy Mexican rice. The centerpiece of the meal seems to be your mole. It shouldn't compete with anything else that is spicy.
Go with white rice this time to let the mole show off. Save the Mexican rice for another occasion

I'd like recipes for simple Indian Curries that are easy and don't need too many spices.?
I'm a vegetarian and on a very tight budget. I'd like to vary my diet with some very simple curry dishes. Because of my budget I cannot buy too many expensive spices so something tasty and basic would be just fine. Can I subsitute brown rice for the white rice used in Indian cooking? Is is also possible to make Indian chutneys and pickles that are low in salt content?
Buy just one spice blend called Garam Masala from the Indian Grocery store. Keep it in the fridge and you can use it with any Indian curry, it is the King of spices. It already has cumin, coriander, clove, cinnamon and other aromatics. It'll cost you about $2 and you only need about 1/2 to 1 tsp for a curry.
You can use fresh lime and cilantro on the curry to make it taste authentic, cilantro or coriander leaves is cheap and easily available.
You can substitute brown rice for white rice. I am Indian and even if this is not traditional, I've been substituting this for the last 2 years, on and off.
Indian chutneys can most definitely take the low salt, try it. As for pickles, they are highly salted so that they can be preserved, also meant to be eaten in small quantities, unlike the pickles of the west.

Do you know cool easy and fast recipes and dishes with apples?
I know of apple pie only - I am looking for something easy and with less effort to cook - Im not very good in kitchen
any suggestions will be welcome 
Toffee Apples
Equipment
You'll need 15 wooden chopsticks or paddle pop sticks for this recipe.
Ingredients
* 15 small Red Delicious or Pink Lady apples, washed, dried
* 4 cups white sugar
* 1 cup water
* 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
* 2 teaspoons red liquid food colouring
Method
1. Push a stick into each apple. Line 2 baking trays with baking paper. Place sugar and water into a heavy-based saucepan over low heat. Cook, stirring, until sugar has dissolved. Stop stirring. Bring to the boil. Using a wet pastry brush, brush away sugar crystals on sides of saucepan above syrup. Stir in cream of tartar and food colouring.
2. Reduce heat to low. Simmer toffee for 20 minutes or until it reaches hard crack stage. To check if it has reached this stage, add 1 teaspoon of toffee to a glass of ice-cold water. Remove solidified toffee from water and bend it. The toffee should crack easily and not feel sticky. Once toffee is at this stage, remove from heat immediately.
3. Wait until toffee stops bubbling then dip 1 apple into toffee. Tip pan on an angle to coat apple in toffee, especially around stick. Place onto prepared baking tray. Repeat with remaining apples. Allow to set at room temperature.
